Khajuraho Temples : Jabalpur Directory

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Khajuraho Temples

The Khajuraho Temples are one of the most popular tourist destinations in India located some 270km from Jabalpur in the state of Madhya Pradesh. These are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Khajuraho Temples are an excellent example of love to the world. They represent the expression of a highly matured civilization. The exquisite and intricate sculptures of the Khajuraho Temples are a dedication to the womanhood.

History : Khajuraho Temples are believed to have been built by the mighty Chandela rulers in 9th and 10th century AD. The carvings on the outside of these temples are highly sensual and erotic. It has been suggested that these suggest tantric sexual practices. But many believe that they portray that, for seeing the deity, one must leave his or her sexual desires outside the temple. There were earlier some 85 temples out of which only 20 exist today. The Khajuraho Temples are made of sandstone blocks fitted together, the temples are aligned east-west.

The temples at Khajuraho are divided into three broad groups:

  • Eastern Group of Temples :
These can further be divided into two, the temples dedicated to the Jain pantheon and the temples dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses.
  1. Adinath Temple :(Jain Temple) It is dedicated to Adinath, a Jain Tirthankara. The sculpted figures of Yakshis are particularly famous here.
  2. Parsavanath Temple :(Jain Temple) It is dedicated to Parsavanath, the Jain Tirthankara. It is the largest Jain Temple present there.
  3. Ghantai Temple :(Jain Temple) It is well known for the sculpture of a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda and for the sixteen dreams of Mahavira's mother.
  4. The Vamana Temple :(Hindu Temple) The sculptures and carvings of heavenly beauties are famous.
  5. Hanuman Temple :(Hindu Temple) This temple has a statue of Hanuman which is about 8 feet tall.
  6. The Brahma Temple :(Hindu Temple) The granite stone temple has a four-faced idol of Brahma which is very popular in this temple.
  • Southern Group of Temples :
  1. Dulah Deo Temple : This temple built in between 1100 and 1150 AD, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This extremely fascinating temple is built in the traditional shikhara style of architecture.
  2. Chaturbhuja Temple : This is a spectacular temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The statue of Vishnu is 3 meters tall.
  • Western Group of Temples :
  1. Chaunsat Yogini Temple : It is the popular granite temple of Khajuraho dating back to 900 AD, which is dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is the only granite temple in Khajuraho.
  2. Kandariya Mahadeo : The largest temple in Khajuraho which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The height of the temple is 31 meters.
  3. Chitragupta Temple : A must see temple dedicated to the Sun God.
